Multiple firing states and nociceptive information processing in the dorsal horn network

Abstract

Deep Dorsal Horn relay Neurons (dDHNs) of the spinal cord are known to exhibit multiple firing patterns under the control of local metabotropic neuro-modulations: tonic firing, plateau potential and spontaneous oscillations.
This work investigates the role of interactions between voltage-gated channels on the expression of these different firing patterns and then correlates them to their functional role in sensory information processing. Using a modeling approach, we found a general mechanism for the firing switch based on the balance between the inward and outward currents. This finding allows us to extend the regulation of the firing switch to other neuromodulators and to network effect like inhibition.
Further exploration revealed the existence of a new firing mode, called accelerating mode, at the edge of the transition between the tonic and the plateau mode. We found that this particular mode corresponds to an optimal information transfer state.  This work opens new perspective about pain information processing in the spinal cord.
