Simulation in Teaching and Training Systems
Simulations are often part of computerbased teaching and training. As one part of education in computer science, simulation lends itself for computer based teaching and training. Virtual characters are often based on simulations, simulationsystems are developed as teaching and training system (an approach which is close to game-based learning). Our research in this field is mainly about how to teach modeling and simulation with intelligente teaching and training systems (ITS), and how to combine simulationsystems and ITS.
Parallel and distributed Simulation
To efficiently simulate complex models, it is often desirable to distribute the simulation over several processors. This can be done using various types of hardware (supercomputers, PCs), which are connected via different kinds of networks (LAN, Internet). Besides the development of synchronisation algorithms, which ensure the validity of a parallel execution, specific requirements of certain architectures (Cluster, Grid) as well as mechanisms for load distribution and management are of interest.
Modelling and Simulation Methods for Systems Biology
The emerging fields of computational biology and systems biology integrate concepts and ideas from biological sciences, engineering disciplines, mathematics, statistics, and computer science. The objective is to understand how gene regulation, molecular interactions, and cellular networks inter-operate, thus scaling up from molecular biology to systems biology. In this context modeling and simulation methods and tools play a central role.
Teaching and Training Systems
Computer based teaching and training systems are part of e-Learning research. Aspects of research are: how to integrate the computer in the teaching process, and how to individualize and optimize learning with computers. Computer based teaching and training system is a broad term, which covers several different types of systems. Focus of our research here is in intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), also called intelligent teaching and training systems (ITTS)CC
Multi Agent Systems and Simulation
Multiagent systems are systems, that operate in open, dynamic environments. Relations between multiagent systems and modelling and simulation are manifold.
Multi Level, Multi Formalism Modelling and Variable Structure Models
Modelling and simulating complex systems whose sub-systems scale over several orders of magnitude with respect to size, numbers, or time requires switching between overview and detail perspectives on need. These multiple perspectives are supported by multi-level and multi-formalism modeling and simulation. Variable structure models support models that change their own composition, interaction, and behavior pattern during simulation. All these approaches lend additional structure to the description of systems.
